![]() Julian Smith is an award-winning journalist, editor and photographer specializing in science, conservation, travel and adventure.
His articles and photographs have appeared in Esquire, Smithsonian, Wired, Outside, National Geographic Traveler, the Los Angeles Times, and the Washington Post, among others. He's also a contributing editor at Archaeology magazine. Julian's 2020 book Aloha Rodeo: Three Hawaiian Cowboys, the World's Greatest Rodeo, and a Hidden History of the American West won the 2020 Oregon Book Award and was named one of NPR's 100 Best Books of the Year for 2019. With degrees in biology and wildlife ecology, Julian helped launch and edit Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, an international peer-reviewed scientific journal. He has written travel guidebooks to El Salvador, Ecuador, Virginia, the Four Corners and Portland, Oregon, and has taught writing, editing, and literature at the Gotham Writers' Workshop and the College of Santa Fe.
