Julian Smith is an award-winning writer, editor and photographer specializing in travel, science and lifestyle topics.

He is the author of the travel guidebooks On Your Own in El Salvador, Moon Handbooks Ecuador, Moon Handbooks Virginia and Moon Handbooks Four Corners, which won the Lowell Thomas Award for best guidebook from the Society of American Travel Writers.

Julian’s writing and photography has appeared in numerous books, magazines, newspapers, and websites.

With a background in the natural sciences, including degrees in biology and wildlife ecology, he helped launch and edit Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, an international peer-reviewed scientific journal.

In 2006 he was chosen as the first Artist-in-Residence at Mesa Verde National Park.

He lives in Portland, OR.
